Former United striker Herd dies aged 82

Image
Soccer Digest Former United striker Herd dies aged 82 Former Manchester United and Scotland striker David Herd has died at the age of 82, his old club announced on Sunday. Herd played a key role in United's revival following the 1958 Munich air disaster and scored twice in their 3-1 win over Leicester in the 1963 FA Cup final. He also helped United win the English league title in 1965 and 1967. Herd, who previously played for Arsenal, scored 145 goals for United. He left United for Stoke a month after they won the European Cup against Benfica in 1968, a success in which he played little part having suffered a broken leg the year before. United and Stoke were involved in a Premier League match on Sunday, with players from both clubs wearing black armbands as a mark of respect to Herd. "Everybody at Manchester United is saddened to hear of the passing of David Herd," the club posted on manutd.com. "We can confirm that both United and Stoke will wear

Simeone different proposition to his dad

Image
Soccer Digest The name Simeone is usually associated in football terms with grit, ruthless determination and a willingness to bend the rules to their limit in order to win. Former Argentina captain Diego Simeone was described as playing with a knife between his teeth as he patrolled the midfield and, as Atletico Madrid coach, he has instilled the same iron will in his team. His son Giovanni is now making his name in Italian football - but showing very different qualities. A forward rather than a bruising defensive midfielder, the 21-year-old scored for the second game running as Genoa beat Bologna 1-0 on Sunday, although it was a goal that did not go in which suggested his true potential. In a moment more reminiscent of Lionel Messi than his father, Simeone collected the ball deep inside the Bologna half. He turned his marker, charged 50 metres down the left flank and found a gap between goalkeeper Angelo da Costa and his near post, only to see his shot hit the foot of

Pochettino revels in win over 'great' City

Image
Soccer Digest   T ottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino hailed a "great, great victory" after his side produced a magnificent show of force to beat Manchester City 2-0 on Sunday. An early Aleksandar Kolarov own goal and a 37th-minute Dele Alli effort at White Hart Lane saw Spurs condemn Pep Guardiola to his first defeat as City manager. In the process, Spurs climbed to within a point of leaders City and now boast the last unbeaten record in the English top flight. "It was a great, great victory for us against this opposition. I am very happy," Pochettino said. "Sometimes when you have a plan, it is good, sometimes less so, but Manchester City are a great team. It is difficult to play against them. "We need to follow this after the international match and we have more tough games after the international break. "The belief and faith in the way that we work needs to be consistent from the start of the season and we need to concentra

City must learn from defeat - Pep

Image
Soccer Digest Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola finds nothing abnormal in his team's 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur but wants the side to learn from Sunday's loss and put their Premier League campaign back on track. City could not cope with the intensity, pace and pressing of Spurs, ending Guardiola's hopes of becoming the first manager to win his first seven Premier League matches. "We had problems; they were one step in front of us and we have to learn from that. Do I have regrets about my decisions? Maybe yeah. But we will learn so it doesn't happen again," Guardiola told reporters. "I never thought that we would not lose a game. It is normal to the process; sometimes it happens and it can help us improve. At the end of the season you can win and still realise that you are not perfect." The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss believes Spurs, who now sit second in the standings, are strong contenders for the league title.

Liverpool fight back to sink Swansea

Image
Soccer Digest J ames Milner propelled Liverpool to second place in the Premier League as his late penalty secured a 2-1 win against Swansea on Saturday. Milner's spot-kick sealed an impressive comeback for Jurgen Klopp's team and enabled the Reds to move within two points of Premier League leaders Manchester City, who face Tottenham on Sunday. Liverpool trailed to an early Leroy Fer goal at the Liberty Stadium and looked second-best before Roberto Firmino took control to inspire his side's fourth successive league victory. Brazil forward Firmino scored Liverpool's equaliser early in the second half and won the crucial penalty that Milner converted in the final minutes. Struggling Swansea's fifth defeat in seven league games will increase the pressure on manager Francesco Guidolin, who has had to deal with speculation he is set to lose his job. Ryan Giggs and Bob Bradley are among the names reported lined up as potential replacements for Guidolin. Kl

Swansea sack manager Guidolin

Image
Soccer Digest   Swansea hired former United States coach Bob Bradley as their new manager on Monday after the struggling Premier League club sacked Francesco Guidolin on his birthday. Guidolin's 61st birthday quickly turned sour as the Italian learnt he was being forced out after Saturday's 2-1 defeat against Liverpool left Swansea just above the relegation zone with only one win from their seven league matches this season. Guidolin saved Swansea from relegation after joining the south Wales club in January and was given a two-year contract at the end of last season. But an American consortium led by Stephen Kaplan and Jason Levien inherited Guidolin when they took over in July and reports began to emerge that his job could be in danger as soon as Swansea began to struggle. After beating Burnley on the opening day of the season, Swansea went on a six-match winless run in the Premier League, including three consecutive defeats. That was enough to convince the

Oil Price Hits $50, Nigeria’s Exports To Rise

Image
Politics Digest ’Femi Asu Global oil benchmark, Brent crude, extended its rally on Sunday to hit the $50 per barrel mark, the third time this year. This comes as the expected return of the Forcados export terminal has helped to boost Nigeria’s planned crude oil exports this month to about 1.98 million barrels per day, the most since January. Forcados, whose export has been suspended since February after militant attack on the export line, is one of Nigeria’s largest crude grades with an average output of about 200,000 bpd last year. No tankers have loaded from the terminal so far, according to Bloomberg ship-tracking data. Eight cargoes are scheduled to load this month with another six planned for November. The recent upsurge in militant attacks in the Niger Delta pushed oil shipments, the nation’s biggest export, to as low as 1.38 million bpd in August from a high of 2.1 million bpd in January. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, last week,

In the long run, this would be a win-win situation for both t
